When I visited Molino Basin Campground in Arizona's Santa Catalina Mountains in early July, I was checking to see if the Canyon Grapes (Vitis arizonica) that grow there were ripe yet or not. These small grapes turn a purplish-blue color when they are ripe, but these ones were still stubbornly an unripe green.
Our native Canyon Grapes are edible, but they are very small and mostly seed. I've had some trouble photographing ripe Canyon Grapes because they tend to ripen unpredictably and are often eaten by hungry, sharp-eyed birds as soon as they do ripen.
