Because of their attractive, blue-green coloration, Blue Candle cacti are popular additions to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.delange.org\/CactusBMyrtle\/CactusBMyrtle.htm\">cactus and xeriscape gardens<\/a> here in Arizona. One of the smaller and definitely weirder-looking cultivated forms available in nurseries is <em>M. geometrizans<\/em> crest &#8216;Dinosaur Back&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/images\/firefly\/2007\/April\/Myrtillocactus-geometrizans.jpg\" alt=\"Blue Candle, Blue Myrtle Cactus, or Garambullo (Myrtillocactus geometrizans crest 'Dinosaur Back')\" title=\"Blue Candle, Blue Myrtle Cactus, or Garambullo (Myrtillocactus geometrizans crest 'Dinosaur Back')\" width=\"480\" height=\"404\" class=\"post-photo\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Like other plants and cacti, Blue Candles can suffer from fasciation, abnormal proliferative growth of the apical meristems (growing tips) causing cresting and other bizarre growth forms.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/images\/firefly\/2007\/April\/Myrtillocactus-Dinosaur.jpg\" alt=\"Blue Candle, Blue Myrtle Cactus, or Garambullo (Myrtillocactus geometrizans crest 'Dinosaur Back')\" title=\"Blue Candle, Blue Myrtle Cactus, or Garambullo (Myrtillocactus geometrizans crest 'Dinosaur Back')\" width=\"400\" height=\"581\" class=\"post-photo\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The narrow crests of crested Blue Candles do look a little bit like a dinosaur&#8217;s back, especially like that of a Stegosaurus (<em>Stegosaurus<\/em> spp.), but I think that these strange-looking, crested cacti look even more like some type of blue-green coral.<\/p>\n<p>The landscape designers at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.qbgardens.org\/\">Quail Botanical Gardens<\/a> in Encinitas, California cleverly used the crested Blue Candle&#8217;s coral-like appearance in their truly remarkable <a href=\"http:\/\/www.signonsandiego.com\/uniontrib\/20050102\/news_mz1h2quail.html\">Under the Sea Garden<\/a>, an all cactus and succulent recreation of a coral reef.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Blue Candle, Blue Myrtle Cactus, or Garambullo (Myrtillocactus geometrizans) is a large, white-flowered, columnar, treelike cactus native to Mexico.
