In January of 2007, this lone male Northern Pintail was begging for food with a large number of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.birds.cornell.edu\/AllAboutBirds\/BirdGuide\/Mallard_dtl.html\">Mallards<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/firefly\/2006\/03\/12\/american-wigeons\/\">American Wigeons<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/firefly\/2006\/01\/22\/ring-necked-ducks\/\">Ring-necked Ducks<\/a> at Tucson&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pima.gov\/nrpr\/places\/agua_pk\/index.htm\">Agua Caliente Park<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/images\/firefly\/2007\/January\/Northern-Pintail.jpg\" alt=\"Male Northern Pintail (Anas acuta)\" title=\"Male Northern Pintail (Anas acuta)\" width=\"480\" height=\"373\" class=\"post-photo\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A Male Northern Pintail has a black bill, brown head, a white neck with a narrow white stripe extending part way up the head, gray sides, and a long, thin, mainly black tail. The females are a mottled brown and have shorter tails.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve never seen a Northern Pintail begging for handouts before, and one reason may be that these ducks have a low tolerance for all the crowding and jostling of the begging duck swarm. This Northern Pintail was probably the meanest begging duck I&#8217;ve ever seen, and he methodically bit every other duck that came within biting range.
