{"id":705,"date":"2007-01-08T00:09:41","date_gmt":"2007-01-08T07:09:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/firefly\/2007\/01\/08\/red-tailed-hawk-immature\/"},"modified":"2007-01-08T00:09:41","modified_gmt":"2007-01-08T07:09:41","slug":"red-tailed-hawk-immature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/firefly\/2007\/01\/08\/red-tailed-hawk-immature\/","title":{"rendered":"Red-tailed Hawk, Immature"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I observed this immature <a href=\"http:\/\/www.birds.cornell.edu\/AllAboutBirds\/BirdGuide\/Red-tailed_Hawk_dtl.html\">Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis)<\/a> in December of 2006 at the Sweetwater Wetlands here in Tucson.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/images\/firefly\/2007\/January\/Red-Tailed-Hawk-Im-1.jpg\" alt=\"Immature Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis)\" title=\"Immature Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis)\" width=\"420\" height=\"500\" class=\"post-photo\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I observed what appeared to be the same bird again on another visit to the wetlands in early January, 2007.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/images\/firefly\/2007\/January\/Red-Tailed-Hawk-Im-2.jpg\" alt=\"Immature Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis)\" title=\"Immature Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis)\" width=\"420\" height=\"500\" class=\"post-photo\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I wasn&#8217;t sure at first what kind of hawk it was, but it had the large size of a <em>Buteo<\/em> and the dark-streaked belly band of many Red-tailed Hawks. However, it lacked the characteristic rusty-red tail of a Red-tailed Hawk and instead had brown-barred tail.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, when the hawk flew, I was able to see the characteristically patterned undersides of the wings which allowed me to quickly identify it as a Red-tailed Hawk despite its lack of a rusty-red tail.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/images\/firefly\/2007\/January\/Red-Tailed-Hawk-Im-3.jpg\" alt=\"Identification guide for Red-tailed Hawks (Buteo jamaicensis) using an immature bird\" title=\"Identification guide for Red-tailed Hawks (Buteo jamaicensis) using an immature bird\" width=\"480\" height=\"355\" class=\"post-photo\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Immature Red-tailed Hawks have light to dark brown, variably-barred tails and noticeably paler eyes than the adults.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike most of the adult hawks I encounter, this immature hawk let me approach it close enough to get usable photographs. I&#8217;ve found that hawks in general won&#8217;t let you approach them on foot very closely, and these suspicious, sharp-eyed birds will quickly notice you taking any interest in them and will promptly fly away.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I observed this immature Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) in December of 2006 at the Sweetwater Wetlands here in Tucson.
