I spotted this juvenile Western Kingbird in late July in the grassy foothills of the Santa Rita Mountains south of Tucson.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/images\/firefly\/2006\/November\/Western-Kingbird-juvenile.jpg\" alt=\"Juvenile Western Kingbird (Tyrannus verticalis)\" title=\"Juvenile Western Kingbird (Tyrannus verticalis)\" width=\"480\" height=\"386\" class=\"post-photo\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Juvenile Western Kingbirds are very similar to juvenile <a href=\"http:\/\/www.birds.cornell.edu\/AllAboutBirds\/BirdGuide\/Scissor-tailed_Flycatcher_dtl.html\">Scissor-tailed Flycatchers (Tyrannus forficatus)<\/a>, but Scissor-tailed Flycatchers are quite rare here in Arizona (although my mother did see one here in Tucson this summer) and they do not breed here.<\/p>\n<p>Adult Western Kingbirds are gray above, yellow below, and have brown wings and a very distinctive white-edged, dark-tipped brown tail.
