{"id":634,"date":"2006-09-06T09:04:51","date_gmt":"2006-09-06T16:04:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/firefly\/2006\/09\/06\/huachuca-mountain-rocktrumpet-moth\/"},"modified":"2007-09-03T23:43:25","modified_gmt":"2007-09-04T06:43:25","slug":"huachuca-mountain-rocktrumpet-moth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/firefly\/2006\/09\/06\/huachuca-mountain-rocktrumpet-moth\/","title":{"rendered":"Huachuca Mountain Rocktrumpet Moth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After a tip from a reader about some night-blooming <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fireflyforest.com\/flowers\/1472\/macrosiphonia-brachysiphon-huachuca-mountain-rocktrumpet\/\">Huachuca Mountain Rocktrumpets (Macrosiphonia brachysiphon)<\/a> in a wash near <a href=\"http:\/\/www.colossalcave.com\/welcome.html\">Colossal Cave<\/a>, my dad, my cousin visiting from Colorado, and I went out looking for them one evening over Labor Day weekend in 2006. I had never seen these plants before and was quite eager to photograph them.<\/p>\n<p>Huachuca Mountain Rocktrumpets are native subshrubs with extremely fragrant, tubular, jasmine-like, white flowers that open at night. These plants have oval, opposite leaves and <a href=\"http:\/\/seinet.asu.edu\/imageLibrary\/ViewPhotos.jsp?id=74363\">distinctive slender, elongated, paired seed pods<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Using a map and photo from the helpful reader, GPS, and several high-powered flashlights, we managed to find the Huachuca Mountain Rocktrumpets in the dark, but unfortunately none of them were still blooming. I did see this rather spooky-looking moth with gleaming coppery eyes perched on some of the developing seed pods though.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/images\/firefly\/2006\/September\/Macrosiphonia-brachysiphon.jpg\" alt=\"Huachuca Mountain Rocktrumpet (Macrosiphonia brachysiphon) seed pods and a moth with glowing eyes\" title=\"Huachuca Mountain Rocktrumpet (Macrosiphonia brachysiphon) seed pods and a moth with glowing eyes\" width=\"400\" height=\"457\" class=\"post-photo\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Oh well, now that I know where these plants are, I will return next year to get some photos of the flowers.<\/p>\n<p>Update: I finally <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fireflyforest.com\/flowers\/1472\/macrosiphonia-brachysiphon-huachuca-mountain-rocktrumpet\/\">found these flowers blooming<\/a> one heavily overcast morning in late August of 2007.
