The Tohono O\u2019odham people call this time Ha:sa\u00f1 Bak Masad, the month to <a href=\"http:\/\/storytrail.com\/pages\/Saguaroharvest.html\">gather Saguaro fruit<\/a> (Ha:sa\u00f1 is pronounced &#8220;Hawshawn&#8221; and means Saguaro). However, most of these luscious red fruits with their abundant black seeds are not gathered by humans, most Saguaro fruits are instead eagerly consumed by a wide variety of wildlife.<\/p>\n<p>Saguaro fruits split open into flowerlike shapes when ripe, and I observed this little <a href=\"https:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/firefly\/2007\/02\/01\/verdin\/\">Verdin (Auriparus flaviceps)<\/a> busily eating the freshly exposed red flesh on the Saguaro fruit &#8220;petals&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/images\/firefly\/2006\/August\/verdin-saguaro-fruit-1.jpg\" alt=\"Saguaro (Carnegiea gigantea) fruit and a Verdin (Auriparus flaviceps)\" title=\"Saguaro (Carnegiea gigantea) fruit and a Verdin (Auriparus flaviceps)\" width=\"400\" height=\"522\" class=\"post-photo\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Despite the risk of getting all dirty and sticky, the Verdin was even crawling inside the partly opened Saguaro fruits, probably because these were the freshest and the juiciest.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/images\/firefly\/2006\/August\/verdin-saguaro-fruit-2.jpg\" alt=\"Saguaro (Carnegiea gigantea) fruit and a Verdin (Auriparus flaviceps)\" title=\"Saguaro (Carnegiea gigantea) fruit and a Verdin (Auriparus flaviceps)\" width=\"480\" height=\"427\" class=\"post-photo\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Verdins have a love for sweet juice, and I will often see them consuming spilled nectar at my hummingbird feeders.<\/p>\n<p>The sky was dark gray in the above photos because a severe thunderstorm was just minutes away.
