{"id":618,"date":"2006-08-15T09:59:38","date_gmt":"2006-08-15T16:59:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/firefly\/2006\/08\/15\/northern-cloudywing-butterflies\/"},"modified":"2008-04-15T22:02:35","modified_gmt":"2008-04-16T05:02:35","slug":"northern-cloudywing-butterflies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/firefly\/2006\/08\/15\/northern-cloudywing-butterflies\/","title":{"rendered":"Northern Cloudywing Butterflies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/plants.usda.gov\/java\/profile?symbol=MOPE\">Pony Beebalm (Monarda pectinata)<\/a> blooms in August and September in upland and lower mountain areas here in Arizona, and I&#8217;m not sure why, but these white flowers seemed to be very popular with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.butterfliesandmoths.org\/species?l=1948&#038;chosen_state=04*Arizona\">Northern Cloudywing (Thorybes pylades)<\/a> butterflies.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/images\/firefly\/2006\/August\/Thorybes-pylades-2.jpg\" alt=\"Northern Cloudywing (Thorybes pylades) butterfly on Pony Beebalm (Monarda pectinata) flowers\" title=\"Northern Cloudywing (Thorybes pylades) butterfly on Pony Beebalm (Monarda pectinata) flowers\" width=\"400\" height=\"509\" class=\"post-photo\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Northern Cloudywing butterflies are in the Skipper Family (Hesperiidae) and like the other family members, they have relatively large eyes, plump bodies, and a moth-like appearance.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/images\/firefly\/2006\/August\/Thorybes-pylades-1.jpg\" alt=\"Northern Cloudywing (Thorybes pylades) butterfly on Pony Beebalm (Monarda pectinata) flowers\" title=\"Northern Cloudywing (Thorybes pylades) butterfly on Pony Beebalm (Monarda pectinata) flowers\" width=\"480\" height=\"400\" class=\"post-photo\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Northern Cloudywings are dark brown and can be identified by the pattern of small clear spots on their forewings and by the two faintly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nearctica.com\/butter\/plate23\/Tpylades.htm\">darker bands on their ventral hindwings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the oddly hooded shape of the Pony Beebalm flowers, the Northern Cloudywing butterflies had no trouble finding and sipping nectar from the flowers.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/images\/firefly\/2006\/August\/Thorybes-pylades-3.jpg\" alt=\"Northern Cloudywing (Thorybes pylades) butterfly on Pony Beebalm (Monarda pectinata) flowers\" title=\"Northern Cloudywing (Thorybes pylades) butterfly on Pony Beebalm (Monarda pectinata) flowers\" width=\"480\" height=\"400\" class=\"post-photo\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Northern Cloudywing caterpillars feed on plants in the Pea Family (Fabaceae), especially on clover and vetch.
