{"id":614,"date":"2006-08-08T09:11:41","date_gmt":"2006-08-08T16:11:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/firefly\/2006\/08\/08\/gulf-fritillary\/"},"modified":"2008-04-15T21:58:48","modified_gmt":"2008-04-16T04:58:48","slug":"gulf-fritillary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/firefly\/2006\/08\/08\/gulf-fritillary\/","title":{"rendered":"Gulf Fritillary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of my favorite species of butterfly is the beautiful <a href=\"http:\/\/www.butterfliesandmoths.org\/species?l=1664&#038;chosen_state=04*Arizona\">Gulf Fritillary (Agraulis vanillae)<\/a> with its cheerful, almost clown-like colors.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/images\/firefly\/2006\/August\/Agraulis-vanillae-1.jpg\" alt=\"Gulf Fritillary (Agraulis vanillae)\" title=\"Gulf Fritillary (Agraulis vanillae)\" width=\"480\" height=\"380\" class=\"post-photo\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The brown and orange ventral wing surfaces are covered in iridescent silvery white patches. The dorsal wing surfaces are orange and are lined and edged in black.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/images\/firefly\/2006\/August\/Agraulis-vanillae-2.jpg\" alt=\"Gulf Fritillary (Agraulis vanillae)\" title=\"Gulf Fritillary (Agraulis vanillae)\" width=\"480\" height=\"380\" class=\"post-photo\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are three, black-edged white spots on each dorsal forewing and a row of black-edged orange spots on the edges of the dorsal hindwings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.floridanature.org\/species.asp?species=Agraulis_vanillae\">Gulf Fritillary caterpillars<\/a> feed on Passionflower vines (<em>Passiflora<\/em> spp.), both on our native <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fireflyforest.com\/flowers\/1855\/passiflora-mexicana-mexican-passionflower\/\">Mexican Passionflowers (Passiflora mexicana)<\/a> here in Tucson and on the cultivated species of Passionflower as well. If you find caterpillars on your Passionflower plants, they are quite likely the larvae of a beautiful Gulf Fritillary.<\/p>\n<p>The best way to see these lovely butterflies is to cultivate one of their host plants.
