{"id":607,"date":"2006-07-29T07:00:56","date_gmt":"2006-07-29T14:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/firefly\/2006\/07\/29\/rawsons-metalmark\/"},"modified":"2008-04-15T22:12:23","modified_gmt":"2008-04-16T05:12:23","slug":"rawsons-metalmark","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/firefly\/2006\/07\/29\/rawsons-metalmark\/","title":{"rendered":"Rawson&#8217;s Metalmark"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.butterfliesandmoths.org\/species?l=1641&#038;chosen_state=04*Arizona\">Rawson&#8217;s Metalmark (Calephelis rawsoni)<\/a> butterflies are quite small and very easy to overlook, but when seen close-up they are surprisingly beautiful. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/images\/firefly\/2006\/July\/Calephelis-rawsoni-1.jpg\" alt=\"Rawson's Metalmark (Calephelis rawsoni) butterfly\" title=\"Rawson's Metalmark (Calephelis rawsoni) butterfly\" width=\"480\" height=\"420\" class=\"post-photo\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The dorsal wing surfaces are a deep red-brown with a pattern of dark wavy lines. A row of black spots runs between two sparkling metallic silver lines along the edges of the fringed wings. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nearctica.com\/butter\/plate12\/Crawson.htm\">ventral wing surfaces<\/a> are similarly marked but are a lighter brownish orange color.<\/p>\n<p>Rawson&#8217;s Metalmarks are found in moist areas, such as along streams and in riparian areas here in Arizona, and they are usually localized throughout their range. I spotted this one in a wet, weedy drainage gulch near the Tanque Verde Wash here in Tucson.<\/p>\n<p>A favorite food plant of Rawson&#8217;s Metalmark caterpillars is the <a href=\"http:\/\/museum.utep.edu\/chih\/gardens\/plants\/DtoF\/eupatgre.htm\">Palmleaf Thoroughwort (Conoclinium greggii)<\/a>, which also happens to be one of the best flowers for attracting many species of adult butterflies as well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rawson&#8217;s Metalmark (Calephelis rawsoni) butterflies are quite small and very easy to overlook, but when seen close-up they are surprisingly beautiful.
