{"id":554,"date":"2006-05-29T07:00:19","date_gmt":"2006-05-29T14:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/firefly\/2006\/05\/29\/golden-hooded-tanager\/"},"modified":"2008-04-17T20:04:36","modified_gmt":"2008-04-18T03:04:36","slug":"golden-hooded-tanager","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/firefly\/2006\/05\/29\/golden-hooded-tanager\/","title":{"rendered":"Golden-hooded Tanager"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the most beautiful species of tanager found in Costa Rica is the Golden-hooded Tanager (<em>Tangara larvata<\/em>), also known as Tangara Capuchidorada in Spanish.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/images\/firefly\/2006\/May\/Tangara-larvata-2.jpg\" alt=\"Male Golden-hooded Tanager or Tangara Capuchidorada (Tangara larvata)\" title=\"Male Golden-hooded Tanager or Tangara Capuchidorada (Tangara larvata)\" width=\"480\" height=\"380\" class=\"post-photo\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Male Golden-hooded Tanagers are black with white underparts, a golden, blue-edged hood, a black mask, and a turquoise-blue rump and shoulders.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/images\/firefly\/2006\/May\/Tangara-larvata-1.jpg\" alt=\"Male Golden-hooded Tanager or Tangara Capuchidorada (Tangara larvata)\" title=\"Male Golden-hooded Tanager or Tangara Capuchidorada (Tangara larvata)\" width=\"480\" height=\"380\" class=\"post-photo\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The females are duller and more greenish in color. Golden-hooded Tanagers are usually found in sunlit areas at the forest edge and in the upper forest canopy, where they can be seen feeding on both fruit and insects.<\/p>\n<p>I was waiting near a blooming hibiscus to photograph an elusive hummingbird, when this male Golden-hooded Tanager suddenly flew up and landed on a branch of the hibiscus. I was thrilled to see this beautiful bird and was able to get several photos of him. Of course, as I was photographing the Golden-hooded Tanager, the hummingbird returned. I heard the humming of its wings and the Golden-hooded Tanager glanced up at it, but the uncooperative hummingbird was gone before I could get a photo of it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/images\/firefly\/2006\/May\/Tangara-larvata-3.jpg\" alt=\"Male Golden-hooded Tanager or Tangara Capuchidorada (Tangara larvata)\" title=\"Male Golden-hooded Tanager or Tangara Capuchidorada (Tangara larvata)\" width=\"480\" height=\"380\" class=\"post-photo\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I never did get a decent photo of that hummingbird, but I was even happier to have photographed this beautiful Golden-hooded Tanager instead.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the most beautiful species of tanager found in Costa Rica is the Golden-hooded Tanager (Tangara larvata), also known as Tangara Capuchidorada in Spanish.
