{"id":539,"date":"2005-07-03T15:32:23","date_gmt":"2005-07-03T22:32:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/firefly\/2005\/07\/03\/thurbers-desert-honeysuckle-in-july\/"},"modified":"2007-08-28T19:54:49","modified_gmt":"2007-08-29T02:54:49","slug":"thurbers-desert-honeysuckle-in-july","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/firefly\/2005\/07\/03\/thurbers-desert-honeysuckle-in-july\/","title":{"rendered":"Thurber&#8217;s Desert Honeysuckle in July"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In early July of 2005, I explored the wash in Molino Basin Campground in the Santa Catalina Mountains near Tucson, Arizona, and the only plant that I found in full bloom was this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fireflyforest.com\/flowers\/104\/anisacanthus-thurberi-thurbers-desert-honeysuckle\/\">Thurber&#8217;s Desert Honeysuckle (Anisacanthus thurberi)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/images\/firefly\/2005\/July\/Anisacanthus-thurberi.jpg\" alt=\"Thurber's Desert Honeysuckle (Anisacanthus thurberi)\" title=\"Thurber's Desert Honeysuckle (Anisacanthus thurberi)\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" class=\"post-photo\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These native shrubs bloom most heavily in the springtime, but they also bloom sporadically throughout the year as well, so it was not that unusual to find this Thurber&#8217;s Desert Honeysuckle blooming in July. Perhaps because they were a bit drought-stressed, the flowers were an unusually dull orange color with hints of brown. Whenever they do bloom, the tubular, orange flowers on these scraggly, rather inconspicuous shrubs attract hummingbirds.<\/p>\n<p>Thurber&#8217;s Desert Honeysuckles are mainly found growing in rocky washes and along streams in the mountain foothills around Tucson, and Molino Basin Campground is a good place to observe them here.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In early July of 2005, I explored the wash in Molino Basin Campground in the Santa Catalina Mountains near Tucson, Arizona, and the only plant that I found in full bloom was this Thurber&#8217;s Desert Honeysuckle (Anisacanthus thurberi).
