{"id":485,"date":"2006-04-09T10:03:00","date_gmt":"2006-04-09T17:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/fire\/2006\/04\/09\/golden-headed-scallopwing\/"},"modified":"2008-04-15T21:42:59","modified_gmt":"2008-04-16T04:42:59","slug":"golden-headed-scallopwing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/firefly\/2006\/04\/09\/golden-headed-scallopwing\/","title":{"rendered":"Golden-headed Scallopwing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While looking through a bunch of forgotten photos from my old 4 megapixel digital camera, I happened across this photo of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.butterfliesandmoths.org\/species?l=1972&#038;chosen_state=04*Arizona\">Golden-headed Scallopwing (Staphylus ceos)<\/a> butterfly.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/images\/firefly\/2006\/April\/Staphylus-ceos.jpg\" alt=\"Golden-headed Scallopwing (Staphylus ceos) butterfly\" title=\"Golden-headed Scallopwing (Staphylus ceos) butterfly\" width=\"380\" height=\"335\" class=\"post-photo\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Golden-headed Scallopwing was visiting the flowers of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fireflyforest.com\/flowers\/924\/dalea-albiflora-whiteflower-prairie-clover\/\">Whiteflower Prairie Clover (Dalea albiflora)<\/a> in Sabino Canyon in September, 2004. Whiteflower Prairie Clover is one of the best butterfly flowers that I have ever seen, and it was absolutely covered in butterflies and other insects.<\/p>\n<p>Even among all of the more brightly colored butterflies, this Golden-headed Scallopwing immediately caught my eye with its dark, rather funereal wings and incongruous golden head. It looked almost as if it was wearing a gilded helmet and a tattered, dusty black cape.<\/p>\n<p>Golden-headed Scallopwings have rusty or sooty black wings with fringed edges and tiny white spots on the forewings. Their dark wings usually have a dusty, mouldering appearance, with varying amounts of paler speckling. A Golden-headed Scallopwing can be easily distinguished from other dark Skippers (Family Hesperiidae) by its golden head.<\/p>\n<p>Golden-headed Scallopwings are found in the southern parts of Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, as well as in Mexico. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariposasmexicanas.com\/staphylus_ceos.htm\">larvae<\/a> feed on <a href=\"http:\/\/plants.usda.gov\/java\/profile?symbol=CHFR3\">Fremont&#8217;s Goosefoot (Chenopodium fremontii)<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While looking through a bunch of forgotten photos from my old 4 megapixel digital camera, I happened across this photo of a Golden-headed Scallopwing (Staphylus ceos) butterfly.
