I observed this male <a href=\"http:\/\/www.butterfliesandmoths.org\/species?l=1391&#038;chosen_state=04*Arizona\">Checkered White (Pontia protodice)<\/a> butterfly sipping nectar from a Common Sunflower this last October.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/images\/firefly\/2006\/January\/Pontia-protodice.jpg\" alt=\"Male Checkered White (Pontia protodice) butterfly on a Common Sunflower (Helianthus annuus) flower\" width=\"480\" height=\"480\" class=\"post-photo\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Male Checkered White butterflies like this one can be identified by the broad, faded black cell bar on their forewings and their white ventral hindwings.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/images\/firefly\/2006\/January\/Pontia-protodice-2.jpg\" alt=\"Male Checkered White (Pontia protodice) butterfly on a Common Sunflower (Helianthus annuus) flower\" width=\"480\" height=\"402\" class=\"post-photo\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Female Checkered White Butterflies (not pictured) are much <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dallasbutterflies.com\/Butterflies\/html\/protodice.html\">more strongly patterned or checkered<\/a> than the mostly white males, and the females look very similar to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.butterfliesandmoths.org\/species?l=1392&#038;chosen_state=04*Arizona\">Western White (Pontia occidentalis)<\/a> butterflies, but have slightly paler markings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dallasbutterflies.com\/Butterflies\/LARVA\/protodicelarva.htm\">Checkered White caterpillars<\/a> feed on plants in the Mustard Family (Brassicaceae) and Caper Family (Capparaceae).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Common Sunflowers (Helianthus annuus) can be found growing at the edges of fields and desert washes here in Tucson, and these somewhat weedy plants have large, happy-looking flowers that are very popular with butterflies.
