{"id":374,"date":"2006-01-14T09:10:00","date_gmt":"2006-01-14T16:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/fire\/2006\/01\/14\/dainty-sulphur-butterflies\/"},"modified":"2008-04-15T21:32:33","modified_gmt":"2008-04-16T04:32:33","slug":"dainty-sulphur-butterflies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/firefly\/2006\/01\/14\/dainty-sulphur-butterflies\/","title":{"rendered":"Dainty Sulphur Butterflies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fireflyforest.com\/flowers\/1060\/ericameria-laricifolia-turpentine-bush\/\">Turpentine Bushes (Ericameria laricifolia)<\/a> are some of the last plants to bloom before the arrival of winter, and these brilliant golden-flowered shrubs are one of the few nectar sources for late season insects like these <a href=\"http:\/\/www.butterfliesandmoths.org\/species?l=1458&#038;chosen_state=04*Arizona\">Dainty Sulphur (Nathalis iole)<\/a> butterflies I observed here in late October.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/images\/firefly\/2006\/January\/Nathalis-iole.jpg\" alt=\"Dainty Sulphur (Nathalis iole) butterflies on a Turpentine Bush (Ericameria laricifolia)\" width=\"480\" height=\"380\" class=\"post-photo\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These small, yellow, black and greenish gray butterflies can be identified by the black spots on their ventral forewings. Dainty Sulphur Butterflies show <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariposasmexicanas.com\/nathalis_iole.htm\">seasonal variation<\/a> with the summer forms having yellower ventral wing surfaces and the duller winter forms having grayer ventral wing surfaces.<\/p>\n<p>Dainty Sulphur Butterflies are in the Sulphur Subfamily (Coliadinae), and most of the butterflies in this subfamily are the bright yellow color of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brynmawr.edu\/Acads\/Geo\/mineralCollection\/fullPhotos\/sulphur.htm\">sulphur<\/a>. While the Dainty Sulphur is usually yellow, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dallasbutterflies.com\/Butterflies\/html\/iole.html\">rare white form<\/a> does exist.<\/p>\n<p>Dainty Sulphur caterpillars feed on plants in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hcs.ohio-state.edu\/hcs300\/aster.htm\">Aster Family (Asteraceae)<\/a>, and some of their favorites are cultivated <a href=\"http:\/\/www.botanyworld.com\/tagetes.html\">Marigolds (Tagetes species)<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Turpentine Bushes (Ericameria laricifolia) are some of the last plants to bloom before the arrival of winter, and these brilliant golden-flowered shrubs are one of the few nectar sources for late season insects like these Dainty Sulphur (Nathalis iole) butterflies I observed here in late October.
