Nurseries always have something blooming, and flowers not only attract shoppers, but butterflies as well. I spotted this <a href=\"http:\/\/wc.pima.edu\/~bfiero\/tucsonecology\/animals\/arth_tecr.htm\">Texan Crescent (<em>Anthanassa texana<\/em> or <em>Phyciodes texana<\/em>)<\/a> butterfly perched on a shrub at my local nursery in April of 2005.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/images\/firefly\/2006\/January\/Texan-Crescent-Butterfly.jpg\" alt=\"Texan Crescent (Anthanassa texana or Phyciodes texana) butterfly\" title=\"Texan Crescent (Anthanassa texana or Phyciodes texana) butterfly\" width=\"480\" height=\"344\" class=\"post-photo\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Texan Crescent butterflies can be identified by their dark upper wing surfaces with a row of white dots across the hindwings and a rounded indentation in the far edges of the forewings. Faint orange markings can be seen at the base of the dark dorsal wing surfaces.<\/p>\n<p>These butterflies lay their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.butterfliesandmoths.org\/species?l=1731&#038;chosen_state=04*Arizona\">pearl-like eggs<\/a> on plants in the Acanthus Family (Acanthaceae), which we do have here in the Sonoran Desert.<\/p>\n<p>As I discovered, there is some <a href=\"http:\/\/home.sprintmail.com\/~awiner\/NABAandOpler.html\">disagreement<\/a> on the official scientific name of this species, which is why I listed two scientific names for it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Even though it may look a bit eccentric, I&#8217;ve started taking my camera with me when I go to the plant nursery.
