{"id":356,"date":"2005-12-31T10:42:00","date_gmt":"2005-12-31T17:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/fire\/2005\/12\/31\/baby-jump-up\/"},"modified":"2006-11-11T20:56:21","modified_gmt":"2006-11-12T03:56:21","slug":"baby-jump-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/firefly\/2005\/12\/31\/baby-jump-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Baby Jump-up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fireflyforest.com\/flowers\/1516\/mecardonia-procumbens-baby-jump-up\/\">Baby Jump-ups (Mecardonia procumbens)<\/a> only grow in moist areas such as seeps or along streams here in the southwestern US, but Baby Jump-ups are more widespread in the extreme southern US and in tropical regions to the south.<\/p>\n<p>I discovered several of these small, native wildflowers growing along the stream in Sabino Canyon here in Tucson in September.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/images\/firefly\/2005\/December\/Mecardonia-procumbens.jpg\" alt=\"Baby Jump-up (Mecardonia procumbens)\" title=\"Baby Jump-up (Mecardonia procumbens)\" width=\"480\" height=\"340\" class=\"post-photo\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I have no idea how Baby Jump-ups got their rather silly sounding common name, but their tubular flowers are fairly small, usually less than 1\/2 inch (~1.2 cm) long. The flowers have 2 united upper lobes, 3 lower lobes, and a brown-lined throat. The bright yellow flowers are nestled in 3 leafy green bracts.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/images\/firefly\/2005\/December\/Mecardonia-procumbens-2.jpg\" alt=\"Baby Jump-up (Mecardonia procumbens)\" title=\"Baby Jump-up (Mecardonia procumbens)\" width=\"350\" height=\"455\" class=\"post-photo\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The leaves are opposite with toothed edges, and they will turn black when dry. This plant has four-angled stems like those in the Mint Family (Lamiaceae), but it is actually in the Figwort Family (Scrophulariaceae) along with snapdragons and penstemons.<\/p>\n<p>There is some confusion with the scientific name of this plant, and it has been incorrectly labeled as <em>Bacopa procumbens<\/em> in the past.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Baby Jump-ups (Mecardonia procumbens) only grow in moist areas such as seeps or along streams here in the southwestern US, but Baby Jump-ups are more widespread in the extreme southern US and in tropical regions to the south.
