They bloom during the spring and summer.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/images\/firefly\/2005\/December\/golden-columbine-flower.jpg\" alt=\"Golden Columbine (Aquilegia chrysantha) flower\" width=\"364\" height=\"364\" class=\"post-photo\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Their bright yellow flowers are about 3 inches (7.6 cm) wide and have 5 petals with 2 inch (5 cm) long spurs projecting behind them.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/images\/firefly\/2005\/December\/golden-columbines.jpg\" alt=\"Side-view of a Golden Columbine (Aquilegia chrysantha) flower\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" class=\"post-photo\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The long flower spurs contain the nectar, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biologie.uni-hamburg.de\/b-online\/e38\/38a.htm\">because the spurs are so long<\/a> in this species, the flowers are not pollinated by hummingbirds, but by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biologie.uni-hamburg.de\/b-online\/e38\/aquileg.htm\">moths<\/a> in the <a href=\"http:\/\/nitro.biosci.arizona.edu\/zeeb\/butterflies\/Sphynx.html\">Hawkmoth Family (Sphingidae)<\/a> instead. These moths, such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npwrc.usgs.gov\/resource\/distr\/lepid\/moths\/usa\/1066.htm\">White-lined Sphinx Moth (Hyles lineata or Celerio lineata)<\/a>, have long proboscises (or proboscides) capable of reaching the flower nectar.<\/p>\n<p>Golden Columbines have attractive, delicate leaves divided into three, round-toothed leaflets. With their tall, slender flower stalks, these native perennials can grow to about 4 feet (1.2 m) tall, but the leaves are mostly basal.<\/p>\n<p>I have seen Golden Columbines planted in Tucson gardens, and they do quite well if given regular water and at least afternoon shade.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Golden Columbines (Aquilegia chrysantha) are fairly common in moist, shady canyon areas in the mountains around Tucson.
