{"id":266,"date":"2005-10-15T16:13:00","date_gmt":"2005-10-15T23:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/fire\/2005\/10\/15\/desert-horse-purslane\/"},"modified":"2006-11-11T18:50:07","modified_gmt":"2006-11-12T01:50:07","slug":"desert-horse-purslane","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/firefly\/2005\/10\/15\/desert-horse-purslane\/","title":{"rendered":"Desert Horse-purslane"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fireflyforest.com\/flowers\/2483\/trianthema-portulacastrum-desert-horsepurslane\/\">Desert Horse-purslane or Desert Horsepurslane (Trianthema portulacastrum)<\/a> is common in irrigated and drainage areas here in Tucson, and these low-growing, native plants are considered to be invasive weeds in agricultural areas.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fireflyforest.net\/images\/firefly\/2005\/October\/Trianthema-portulacastrum.jpg\" alt=\"Desert Horse-purslane or Desert Horsepurslane (Trianthema portulacastrum) flower\" title=\"Desert Horse-purslane or Desert Horsepurslane (Trianthema portulacastrum) flower\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" class=\"post-photo\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Desert Horse-purslane plants are fleshy and succulent, and the abundant water storage cells in their tissues will sparkle with moisture in the direct sunlight.<\/p>\n<p>Desert Horse-purslanes are members of the Fig-marigold Family (Aizoaceae), and other members of this succulent family include iceplants, such as the attractive, non-native <a href=\"http:\/\/www.genomenewsnetwork.org\/articles\/01_02\/Crystalline_ice.shtml\">Crystalline Iceplant (Mesembryanthemum crystallinum)<\/a> which has unusually large water storage cells that look like sparkling beads of ice.<\/p>\n<p>I have never considered lowly Desert Horse-purslane plants to be at all attractive, but I now think that I was just too large to appreciate them. Up close, from the perspective of a small creature (or a camera&#8217;s macro lens), their pink flowers are actually quite pretty.
