Coralbeans (Erythrina flabelliformis) are deciduous shrubs with large, tropical-looking, red flowers. The flamboyant flowers of this Arizona native are followed by large, brown bean pods containing beautiful red beans.
All parts of this plant, especially the beans, are poisonous and contain erythrina alkaloids, including the curare-like beta-erythroidine which can cause respiratory paralysis and death if ingested. The red seeds from Erythrina species have been used to make colorful necklaces and other botanical jewelry, but they should be kept safely away from small children and curious pets.
