The days are hot here in Tucson right now, usually above 100 °F (37.8 °C) with some days over 110 °F (43.3 °C). Two juvenile Western Screech-Owls (Megascops kennicottii) have been bathing in a small fountain birdbath in my yard most afternoons.
The days are so hot that even these nocturnal birds are leaving their shady sleeping spots and venturing out into the bright sunlight just to splash around in some water to cool off a bit. These owls will sometimes remain for hours at the birdbath, which greatly annoys the other birds who also want some water but are too afraid to get anywhere near even one predatory Western Screech-Owl.
