Firefox about:config

If you are brave and/or snoopy enough to risk tinkering with preference settings (like me) or technically adept, the Firefox web browser has a config file which allows you to set all sorts of customized preferences. This page explains the different preference settings and their possible values.

To edit the config file in Firefox, open a browser window and type about:config in the web address field and then press enter or return.

Double click on a preference item to change it. If you make a mistake, you can right-click on that preference item and choose "Reset", which will return it to its default value. After you change the settings, quit and then relaunch Firefox.

I am still using Firefox 1.0.7 for Mac OS X, and I don't know if Firefox 1.5 has more printing options, but you can change the content of the headers and footers (URL, date and time, page number, etc.) on printed web pages by using the config file. Look for the following in the config file:

print.print_footerleft
print.print_footerright
print.print_headerleft
print.print_headerright

The values for each tell Firefox what to print in each header or footer location, and leaving it blank means print nothing there:

&T = Title of the document
&U = URL
&D = Date/time
&P = Page number
&PT = Page number "of" total pages
